If State Senator Matt McCoy (D-Des Moines) has his way, he could become quite an icon in Japan. Senator McCoy, a proud homosexual has introduced a bill that neuters Iowa’s marital laws by replacing the words “husband” and “wife” with “spouse” (Senate File 353). McCoy believes a bill to remove references to husbands and wives will help the Iowa economy. He just might have a point, especially if the changes are allowed to apply to Taichi Takashita and a thousand of his friends.
In Japan there is a growing obsession with escaping from reality. Millions head home after work to assume a cartoon character on their computer. On-line virtual reality communities are so popular that some characters have been elevated to superstar status. The country even has two cartoon characters as ambassadors, like "Kitty" pictured above.
The relationships that are developed in these virtual realities are so “real” that many have fallen in “love” with other characters and are asking the government to legally recognize their commitments. These individuals are petitioning the Japanese government to recognize marriage between humans and their cartoon partners. One supporter supported the request by saying, "For a long time I have only been able to fall in love with two-dimensional people and currently I have someone I really love.”
Taichi said, “Even if she is fictional, it is still loving someone. I would like to have legal approval for this system at any cost."
Could it be that the cost of marrying the object of his affection might be a move to Iowa? Thanks to Senator McCoy, Mr. Takashita may gets his wish. Were the terms husband and wife simply replaced with the word “spouse” it’s not difficult to imagine that Mr. Takashita’s marriage would be recognized in the great state of Iowa!
Redefining marriage is wrong. Marriage is the union of one man and one woman becoming husband and wife to form a new family. That’s what is best for the culture. Traditional marriage has worked since the dawn of civilization and it will continue to work till the end of time if we only let it.
Will Senator McCoy’s bill redefine the foundation of human relationships? Could his effort to eliminate obvious human characteristics from Iowa law lead to marriage between a human and a cartoon? If that’s the case, would that make divorce as easy as pressing the delete key?
Instead, it is Senate File 353 that ought to be deleted.

Wait, how does gender-neutral phrasing allow people to join with fictional characters in a legal contract?
People like you are the only ones making this jump of logic. Get out of Iowa, and take your box of fail with you.
Can I get a gaymen?!?!?! How does Mr. McCoy's bill even compare to what the Japanese are allegedly doing? McCoy is talking about HUMANS and EQUALITY. This just reads as another excuse to blame gays for what is rightfully theirs...the same rights as small-minded people like the author of this article.
This is really quite unbelievable. You're making a connection where one just does not exist. First, McCoy's bill clearly intends to redefine HUMAN relationships. The word "spouse" implies a living human being, not a cartoon.
Somehow I doubt making this small change to an Iowa Code would entice thousands of Japanese, seeking to "escape reality", to moving across the world.
Before you write another arguement, do us all a favor and take a course on persuasive writing.
"Traditional marriage has worked since the dawn of civilization and it will continue to work till the end of time if we only let it."
No, actually, it hasn't. Patriarchal societies and monogamy are actually neither biologically valid nor healthy and have not existed since the dawn of civilization. Go back to history classes and check your facts before making sweeping statements that demonstrate how narrow your arguments really are.
Your argument doesn't make any rational sense. Are you saying that gay people aren't real people and are more like cartoon characters? I wish you would have told me sooner that my gay friends weren't human beings.
Stop being silly and please start making more sense.
Wow! I think you could sum up the arguments of the homosexuals reading this blog in one statement: “Don’t confuse me with the facts, my mind is made up.”
This post is well thought out example of the absurd nature of redefining the term marriage to include partnerships that can under no circumstances ever actually become a marriage.
I could petition the courts to declare me a Big Mac too, but that would never make me a hamburger. Homosexual “marriage” is no more valid than marrying a cartoon character or declaring yourself a hamburger.
IFPC,
To preserve the integrity of your blog, please don't allow people to post as 'anonymous.' What may appear to be numerous people is often only a party of one. And it hinders the exchange. Make them pick a fake name, if they must.
Back to the subject, are the radical advocates posting here denying that there are already numerous groups pushing for the definition of marriage to include ALL CONJUGAL PARTNERS?
And if 'marriage' can be legalized for persons with Same Sex Attraction, how will marriage for a bi-sexual be defined? Won't it require the union of THREE PEOPLE?
How does two consenting adults who love each effect those who already hold a marriage license? What goes on between them is nobodys business except their own. Should I judge your marriage, there is only one person who is the judge, and I don't believe that it is you. How will you be judged when the time comes by not loving others? I think also accordiing to the bible I can stone my disobiedient kid.....Is that right murder is ok?
What it is with Christian organizations who fight to protect families insist on prioritizing issues like gay marriage? CNN recently reported that opponents to the recent Iowa Supreme Court ruling on same-sex marriage prayed outside the courthouse. While that's all fine and dandy for an issue that is obviously close to heart, when is the last time a Christian family organization protested about the lack of health care, the need for better public education, or even to fight for those children who go to bed hungry and lack proper housing or clothing? What about Think of how the resources, funding, and public attention that is spent on this issue could be better allocated to helping families deal with drug and alcohol abuse, violence in the home, and families who are losing their homes, either because of recent natural disaster or the economy. Are these not just as important???
Remember what Jesus said "Whatever you neglected to do unto one of these least of these, you neglected to do unto Me!"
Why do you hate others?

And the word "marriage" used to refer to one man and one woman.
I love how you bring on the total shock reaction to valid opposing viewpoints. Is it really such a stretch?
Isn't that the militant gay lobby's first order of business: redefine terms and hijack the dialogue?
As a devote follower of Jesus I find this entire website ludacrous! Yesterday Newsweek submitted and articles that says 15% of all Americans have no religious affiliation. Why are we spending time debating whether or not gays are people (of course they are people). We should should have our arms wide open welcoming people to Jesus! Democrat....Republican.....Homosexual....
Heterosexual..... Who CARES! Each and everyone of us will always have differences in opinion. Have we forgotten "One Nation Under God"? Let's quit bickering about these minuscule topics and love one another unconditionally. And please quick taking verses out of the bible and using them out of context. Let us not forget the greatest commandment of all... "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength", and the second is "We must love thy neighbor as thy self". Please, Please remember these commandments.
